El capitulo inicia con Ash lamentándose de que su próximo combate será contra Ritchie, un amigo que acaba de conocer, mientras tanto Misty y Brock le cuentan a Ash de las claves para triunfar sobre él en el combate, en donde le mencionan que Ritchie ganó las cuatro rondas previas por 3 a 0 cada una y usando sólo a Pikachu, Charmander y Butterfree en cada combate. Pero esto no desmotiva a Ash, quien dice que aunque Ritchie sea su amigo es un competidor y que esta dispuesto a vencerlo.
