Mientras Ash, Brock, May, Max estaban entrenando, se encuentran con el Profesor Birch/Abedul, quien se encontraba haciendo una investigación en los acantilados acerca de los nidos de Wingull pero aparece uno y lo picotea, en eso cae sobre un Loudred que al molestarse le grita. Cuando se reencuentran él les propone ir a una cueva a ver unos Golbat, entonces deciden acompañarlo, ignorando el programa de entrenamiento de Brock que lo deja triste.
