L, en un intento de analizar la personalidad y comportamiento de su sospechoso, le pide tener un partido de tenis. Más tarde, el agente comienza a realizarle a Light preguntas sobre el «caso Kira» y decide pedirle que los ayude en el caso. Este también le hace pequeñas pruebas a su nuevo amigo y cada vez asegurándose de que no sea Kira. Posteriormente, los dos reciben la noticia de que Soichiro Yagami —el padre de Light— había tenido un ataque al corazón y se encontraba en el hospital. Light le promete a su padre que se asegurará de que Kira sea capturado.
